Mission Statement

The Berlin Institute for Population and Development aims to improve the perception and management of international demographic changes in a context of sustainable development. It therefore focuses on developing and promoting concepts and scientific findings that contribute to a sustainable future.

Code of financing and funding

The Berlin Institute for Population and Development Foundation is an independent scientific research institute that is financed by contributions, project funds, earnings from and donations to the Foundation's endowment. In order to ensure its independent status, the Director of the Berlin Institute is instructed by the steering committee to maintain a balance between the different funding sources.

The Institute's status is recognized by the German tax authorities (North Hannover Office). It was established on November 29, 2000, by Marlene von Reichenbach. During the initial years it received broad support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. It is not permitted for sponsors to influence conclusions of the Berlin Institute's studies.
