The World Population Dynamics Report 2002 offers a comprehensive overview and analysis of demographic changes world wide. It concentrates on the dynamics of population change, as neither the growth nor the decline in numbers alone pose the greatest challenges but the dynamics of demographic processes such as the unprecedented growth or aging of a society, its rising mortality due to HIV/Aids or its rapid urbanization.
Besides the pace of change, it is the growing divergence in demographic developments that poses additional requirements for societies. Increasingly, in neighbouring countries and regions, developments differ significantly or even take different paths of growth or decline and are thus demanding for more and more complex coping strategies on the regional, national and even below the national level.
