Surveys show that around ten per cent of the world's population are thinking of leaving their home countries, should the opportunity arise. The share of people with migratory aspirations is particularly high in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, but low in East and South-East Asia. Many migrants are not wealthy enough to pay for their journeys. For others, there are no safe and regular ways to get to their country of choice. Most international migrants remain within their own greater region. Ultimately, only a small share of those preparing to migrate set off for Europe.

The Berlin Institute for Population and Development provides these free of charge and makes a significant contribution to ensuring that important future issues are discussed on a broad basis and put on the political agenda. The non-profit Berlin Institute works on a non-partisan basis and receives no state funding whatsoever.
