Population Dynamics and Climate Crisis

Africa is now one of the regions in the world where the population is growing the fastest. At the same time, the continent is disproportionately affected by the effects of the climate crisis. Even though a large population does not automatically cause more greenhouse gas emissions, more people have a higher need for energy and resources. The composition and size of a population are also relevant for adaptation strategies to climate change.

The new BI fact sheet sheds light on these connections, explains which effects climate change has on health and why climate resilience is particularly important in growing cities.

The fact sheet was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Sector Initiative Population Dynamics, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
