At the global level, by 2050 an estimated 50 to 60 percent more food than today will need to be produced to feed the growing population. Yet current figures show that food security is worsening rather than improving: According to United Nations estimates, around 122 million more people worldwide suffered from hunger in 2022 than in 2019.

Population development, but also its distribution and age structure, are important factors that influence food security. In world regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where many governments are already struggling to achieve food security and the population is expected to increase by almost one billion by 2050, development cooperation programmes must factor in population developments. Our current fact sheet shows how population dynamics and food security are linked.

The fact sheet series "Population Dynamics in Development Policy Dialogue" was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Sector Initiative Population Dynamics, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
